According to a report from the Associated Press, Florida Gov. Rick Scott is canceling a proposed high-speed train line between Orlando and Tampa and turning back federal funds of more than $2 billion allocated for the project.
Scott said the ridership and revenue projections for the project are too optimistic and new rail line would probably need ongoing state government subsidies, which he said could amount to about $3 billion. On top of that, he added, Florida would be required to refund the federal money iif the rail line failed. The governor said he has told U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about his decision to decline the project.
Scot is a Republican. His actions follow similar rejections of high-speed rail projects by Republican governors in Ohio and Wisconsin.
